Summary: Met with Brett from Ducks Unlimited to talk about security/access
| 2020-11-12 Hill Slough Dennis, Joe, and I arrived around 8 PST to meet Brett, an engineer working with Aaron at Ducks Unlimited (DU). It was a beautiful morning, mild, sunny, and cool. This was a visit to mark an approximate site and to discuss construction/engineering support from DU. The paved road is about 4-5m above the landscape, but at some point I think they are repaving the road at a lower elevation after the road finishes settling. There were a few cars zooming by us while we were there. Between the road and the landscape, there is a waist-high orange safety fence to prevent people from casually wandering in. There is an opening in the safety fence at the start of the paved road by the fenced-in area with construction vehicles. There is also a shallow channel next to the safety fence, but the channel ends right where we would access the site. Current vegetation is mostly dead grasses and shrubs, with some pink succulent. From Dennis's twitter photo, Iryna identified it as salsola soda in its fall color. According to wikipedia, salsola soda is an annual, succulent, salt-tolerant (halophyte) shrub. Common names include opposite-leaved saltwort, oppositeleaf Russian thistle, or barilla plant. The first step will be for Brett’s contractors to set up some chain link fence to mark off the area for the tower scaffolding and the solar panel scaffolding. They will also build a footing or platform on which we can place the scaffolding to prevent it from sinking in the wet mud. At some point, the contractors will build a boardwalk from the road to the tower so we won’t be eroding a trail on the soil and so we can keep our feet dry when flooding begins. Joe and Brett will discuss specifications about the fencing, platform, and boardwalk. The contractors can start working on it in December after they finish up other projects elsewhere. We left around 8:45 PST. |

Iryna identified this as salsola soda in its fall color. S. soda is an annual succulent salt-tolerant shrub.
